That's right, it wouldn't, hence alchemy doesn't work. Glad we 
agree there.

I have a somewhat different view on Lily's sacrifice. Yes, she 
did sacrifice herself for Harry; however, without Snape's request 
to spare Lily's life that sacrifice would have been meaningless. 
The agreement LV gave to SS not to kill Lily came back to bite 
him, IOW. So, although perhaps nauseous, Snape's love saved Harry 
as much as did Lily's IMHO.

The real reason - I had to convince myself that Hagrid wouldn't 
die pre-DH, and it worked.
