I've just reread my calculations of the number of the Thestrals and 
realized that they cannot show how long they have been pulling the 
carriages, because we don't know when Hagrid started using them - only 
after he had enough of them for all the carriages or earlier. So it 
turns out I cannot answer this question ;-(. I admit that I've read 
your question rather absent-mindedly and somehow had it in my head that 
you asked how long it took Hagrid to breed his herd. Sorry :-)!
