If this had happened, I'm willing to think that an interesting story
would have ensued, but it would be very different from what exists. 
The entire relationship with Snape would have been different, and
Harry would probably have died at the end of CoS, unable to summon
Gryffindor's Sword, though perhaps he would have been able to command
the Basilisk.
