In King's Cross, DD says of Voldemort:
He had rendered his soul so unstable that it broke apart when he
committed those acts of unspeakable evil, the murder of your parent,
the attempted killing of a child.  But what escaped from that room was
even less than he knew.  He left more than his body. ...

DD seems under the impression that there was a body.  But maybe the
rebounded AK amplified with the love sacrifice left the body, charred
beyond recognition as is suggested if Quirrell continued choking Harry
and, later, when Harry grabbed at Quirrell's face.
