Well, you are right, it is never addressed directly or
indirectly in the books, but Dumbledore was supremely brilliant,
and he was the transfiguration teacher, and Animagus is a
form of transfiguration.
If seems the pieces are there to make it likely someone so
talented, and especially knowledgable and interested in
Transfiguration would have pursued it.
Still, there is no proof, and it's not relevant to Harry's
story, and I personally think it likely that Dumbledore was
animagus, but that fact just never entered into the story.
