Besides, how is someone supposed to turn back into a human after
"regular" transfiguration? A wizard would need his wand to transfigure
himself back, and he wouldn't be able to use it in the animal form,
unless he has turned into an ape. So what, someone else must transform
him back? Or does he have to wait until the spell wears off (if it
ever does)? 

There is no point in "regular" human transfiguration at all, IMO.
Animagus transformation is another matter - it can be done at will,
and the the wand is not required. If I was a witch, I would certainly
try it :-). Even if I turned out to be some useless animal, it would
be interesting to see the world from another perspective. I guess I'm
just curious this way :-).
