I don't know how far I read before I tossed SS/PS aside. My oldest son 
and I were reading it together and I found reading it aloud very 
difficult. Neither of us got into it. 

It was several books later, when a friend was talking about how much 
she enjoyed the series, that I picked it up again and was enchanted. 
I've read them to my younger son without any problem.

My friend stopped reading after PoA, because the series had become too 
dark for her. I don't think she's ever gone back to them.
