Out of curiosity, did you post this directly, or were you replying to 
posts in another thread? I only ask because the next post listed is 
from 2001. Ancient!

The mark does not seem to be visible at all times. We know the mark 
was groing darker as LV grew stronger,(GoF) but whether that was a 
reflection of his growing strength, or something he was doing 
himself, I don't know.

It's also uncertain if knowledge of the mark was widespread. Sirius 
didn't seem to know about it, and he was in the Order.

The DEs seem to be able to communicate with it, not only to LV. but 
to each other.
