year or so. So maybe during Draco's 6th year, he and Daddy were
still "rah-rah" Voldy supporters, willing to do his bidding in any
way, but certainly by the time of the crisis at the top of the
Astronomy Tower, Draco was no longer fully there. And the way *I*
read DH, none of the Malfoys was any longer doing anything for Voldy's
cause beyond what they *had* to do in order to survive. <snip>

Carol responds:

While I still don't think that Narcissa was a DE, complete with Dark
Mark marring her pretty skin, I agree that she was a nasty person who
held Muggles, "Mudbloods," and House Elves in contempt. But I just
wanted to comment on your last sentence here about the Malfoys not
caring about Voldie's cause. In "Malfoy Manor," it's hard to tell what
Narcissa thinks for certain, but, IMO, she wouldn't have hesitated to
turn Ron and Hermione over to the MoM or Harry over to Voldemort if
Draco hadn't hesited to identify them. As for Lucius, he's obviously
ready to get back into Voldie's good graces (and get a new wand in the
bargain). He's all set to press his Dark Mark to summon Voldie when
Bellatrix screams that they're all in peril because of the sword. I
was struck by the contrast between Draco, who couldn't bring himself
to kill DD, hates Crucioing people, and now hesitates to identify
Harry and his friends, and Lucius, who at this point still only wants
to be restored to his old position as a leader of the DEs. Clearly,
neither Azkaban nor humiliation nor the loss of his wand has changed
Lucius (though he's not the insane fanatic Bellatrix is; he's still
concerned mainly with his own prestige and power and Pure-blood
"superiority"). It's only when he, like Narcissa, fears for Draco that
he finally sets aside any loyalty to the Dark Lord and searches for
his son rather than fighting with the DEs. But, then, he doesn't have
a wand, so he's useless to the DE cause in any case.

Carol, who thinks that Lucius would still have fought for Voldie if he
thought he'd benefit from so doing (and had a wand that worked for him)
