Aussie now:
Usually, boarders stayed at school dormitories because they lived too
far from the school so couldn't commute daily. There may have been
students who lived at Hogsmede and walked to school, but not in
Harry's year.

At times, Mr Malfoy would go to a Quiddtch match, so other parents may
have too.

When visiting the school during the week, the visitor seemed to go
straight to the headmaster's office - Malfoy in COS and Tom Riddle
when asking for the teaching job (and hiding the diadem)

Wizarding parents and visitors had other ways to communicate with the
students. Owl mail seemed popular, but Sirius knew he could visit via
the fireplace.

When Sirius visited Hogsmede, he was a wanted excapee so led them out
of town.

Hogwarts would be stricter than other boarding schools with the
defence system to keep out muggles and the way rival schools didn't
know much about each other (GOF)
