I am currently reading SS/PS with my students (it's thw fifth time I read the boook, though my first in Spanish - he he) and I have also
wondered whether Snape used both occlumency and legilemens with
Quirrel. I suspect he must have, since he was able to "figure out"
that Quirrel was serving Voldemort. Unless, Quirrel - being the weak
person he was - gave in at some point and did something that made
Snape realized who he was really working for.

I like your proposal of reviewing facts/situations that remained
unanswered in the books.
