a_svirn:
Because he was too cocksure. He allowed – in principle – that he could
make a mistake (though not a trivial one, what with him being
extraordinary his mistake couldn't be possibly trivial), but in reality
he didn't anticipate to be fooled or overpowered, or outmanoeuvred.
Besides, he wasn't really *close* to anyone. He may have called Moody
or Slughorn his friends, but in fact they were merely his acquaintances
at best. All Crouch needed to do is play up Moody's idiosyncrasies,
which is to say, to give Dumbledore, who was only too ready to pidgin-
hole other people, exactly what he was waiting to see. Since he wasn't
really close to Moody he wouldn't have noticed the difference.

But then, wouldn't Voldemort have used occlumency?
