Yeah, I'm not great on animal classification.  But still, arachnids 
aren't exactly everyone's favorite pet either (just ask Ron).  The 
choice of name implies to me that the Malfoys want people to keep 
their distance, that there's some danger in the family.  This is a 
family that has always had a great deal of pride and maybe the name is 
supposed to let people know that despite the family's recent troubles, 
the Malfoys can still hurt you if you take them for granted.
