I can't believe
it would break an intense mood to say "the Slytherins who left
earlier" in a way it doesn't break the mood to say "shopkeepers from
Hogsmeade." Hell, the Slytherins would be far more important to the
mood here. Their return would be far more important than these
peoples' entrance--to Harry, to the reader, and to the story. <SNIP>
Alla:
Just want to comment on this point - who says that it will be
important to Harry and to the story? I mean, if we are to assume that
the point is left ambigiuous deliberately, maybe in JKR's mind it is
not important to Harry? Maybe as Pippin says Snape's bravery was far
more important to convince Harry in changing his mind than seeing
that students returned to fight?
So if it is not important to Harry (if we assume that), I do not see
why it is so strange that narrator will not identify Slytherins.
I mean, I understand that people do not have to believe her
interviews or take her interviews into account at all, and I
certainly saw in her interviews what I thought was making up details
on the fly as she said herself. And I wish she would have never done
that. 24 hours anyone?
However, I would not ever think that she would make up something like
that on the fly. Therefore to me her intent is clear and the charge
of bad writing ( if she wanted it clearer) is the most I can throw at
her, although in this instance I won't be doing that.
As I said many times, if in her mind Slytherins are just bad guys,
really I am more than happy and satisfied with such resolution.
Goodness knows I have no love lost for any of the Slytherins in the
story, except maybe Regulus, but while I had seen JKR beating me over
the head with the baseball bat in the books, I certainly seen her
write subtly, and more than one time that is.
I am thinking that this just may be one of those times.
JMO,
Alla
