I love JKR's characters :-). I'm not very interested in magic, so I read her books mostly for the characters (and the story of course :-)). I don't think I would care so much about some "cardboard cutouts) :-).

Well, we see everything from Harry's point of view, we have an opportunity to get inside his head - maybe that's why he seems more real to you then the others. Harry is the only character who "feels" and "thinks" on page, the rest of them are only able to "seem" and "look", as we see them through Harry's eyes :-). Even so, I love how most of them are written, but this is of course just a matter of opinion :-).
