Shelley:
1) Because I think Rowling thought it would "look cool" if Voldemort did so.
2) Some people have theorized that there is a distance limit to apparation, 
hence the need of Wizards to use of other devices to travel (brooms, magic 
carpets of the past, Voldemort's invention of flying).
