I thought they just knew that the spy was someone in the Order not that it was one of James' close friends.

Also, by this time wasn't Snape already working as a spy for Dumbledore? If so, maybe Snape was mad at himself for not knowing who it was. He was an inner circle DE. And it would be much easier to blame James for picking someone than to blame himself for not knowing who the spy was.
