If I could chime in here as well...I believe that the passwords are given to the students from portrait (or statue) to the Prefects who then desseminate them to the students in their respective houses. (See OotP when Harry leaves the feast early only to realize that he hasn't heard the password yet.) I suspect that in OotP that Hermione might have suggested a password that would be easy for Neville as a kindness.
