I actually made a reference to Brave New World, but decided it muddied the point I was making. So I took it out before I hit send.

The difference, as I see it, is that the children in BNW were being taught their level was the best one. The As were told they were best becasue they were the smartest. The Bs were told they didn't have to work as hard as As. I don't remember what the other groups were told. Heck, when I last read BNW, 1984 was still the future.

In the case of Hogwarts, the members of a House are chosen according to the trait they value or possess. House placement doesn't limit their future or determine their lot in life.
