Just to nitpick here--because we don't get much opportunity any more--the baby isn't grabbing the letter. The wording is, "...one small hand closed on the letter..."
I think it's a child just holding onto something that's beside him. Perhaps Harry was used to going to sleep with a small toy or blanket. Maybe he was dreaming about the picture of himself on the broom. ;-)
