Potioncat:
I think JKR did a very good job of keeping "her" secrets, and of giving the
characters the right backgrounds and motivations for their secrecy and
behaviors. So whether we approve or not, we can understand where DD gets his
secrecy, why Snape automatically distrusts Harry's actions, and why Harry
doesn't go to adults.
Lynda:
She did indeed do a good job of secret keeping. I realized early on that
this was one of the recurring motifs/themes and since I recognized early as
well that DD was a master manipulator, learning his secrets was just part of
the whole story to me. And since I'm well steeped in Arthuriana, the added
quest, the one for the Deathly Hallows didn't bother me. I expected
something of the sort, in fact, from early on. I just didn't know what it
would be.
I will say I see secret keeping as a theme rather than simply a motif,
however. It's too prevelent too not be a theme.
