In that, you are very right. Sirius, I am sure, felt so bad about the loss
of his best friends, that he did not move to defend himself. Sirius thought
that he himself had personally failed them. Whatever the wizarding world did
to him, it couldn't compare to the pain he felt at the loss of Lilly and
James. He was a lamb being led to slaughter, and he didn't make a peep to
defend himself, until he realized that he could do something to change the
future, when he realized that the rat (Peter) excaped and was still alive.
That's when we start to see the fire that is within Sirius rise again.
