Divination was pretty clearly optional; I don't remember Malfoy & Co.  
there.  Hermione only took it because she wanted to take _everything,_  
and they had bent the rules very severely to allow her to do so.

Ron and Harry had to take a certain number of electives, and I think  
Ron chose Divination because he saw it as a soft option, and Harry  
signed up for everything Ron did.  If they had dropped Divination or  
asked for something different, they might have wound up somewhere  
where they *oh, horrors!* had to _study_ and _learn something._

I wouldn't have taken it either, but I'd have probably gone with  
Ancient Runes.
