I'm not sure either, but if you had to pick some you trust to
guard a secret that would keep you alive, instead of Peter
Pettigrew or Sirus why not have someone like Albus Dumbledore
be their secret keeper. Voldemort was afraid of Dumbledore and
probably would've stayed as far away from him as he could, even
the death eaters were afraid of Dumbledore.
