I'd rather classify this as arrogance. He never knew what it was to be hexed. Finally, like you said, thanks to Lily proabably, he did deflate his pretty swollen head.

I think that was because she also had immense trust in DD's judgment and respect for his skills. I think she was torn between disapproval and trust.
