I thought that, however self-sufficient and buried in her books Hermione is, she has every evening and morning with her dorm-mates. Kids can be cruel, and Hermione seems to be marching to a different drum the whole time. We later see that Luna was bullied, her possessions taken. I suppose JKR is hinting at the down-side of boarding school.
