Liz now:
I wasn't thinking of it being a Horcrux, that was after any of them were 
alive I believe. It was just the fact that calling back the dead made the 
original brother mad, which gives a similar state of mind to Marvolo and 
Morfin. We could speculate that one of them accidentally activated the 
hallow for instance. Very easily done, if you've ever twiddled a ring around 
your finger when thinking!

Further, and as another thoughts, could parseltongue cause madness? Those we 
know of as 'man/insane' were parselmouths. Unless I've forgotten someone.
