Has the origins of Severus' name ever been discussed?

I'm watching history of the dead and there was a real live warrior
named Severus. This guy really made the rounds. He was very powerful
and conqured lots of countries. He was merciless. The show don't
really say how he died, but I can guarantee it wasn't by a basalisk.

His entire name was Lucius Septimius Severus. He was known as
Severus. He was born in Libya. He had sons, and his wife was from
Syria. His youngest son was a real SOB.

Think JKR got Snape's and Lucius' names from those origins? Course,
Snape looks like an angel compared to the real Severus. His entire
name screams JKR's research.

Severus. The name Lucius is very interesting. Septimius - isn't that
part of a potion. Semptim Sempra? <sp> Don't have the book with me

Wow that does sound like it could have been the origin. I read a
few years back that some of the names came from places in England
either old or recent and if I am remembering correctly Snape is
a small town some where in England. Could be that what you found
could be where the rest of his name came from also. And I would
bet you are correct about this person supplying the name for
Lucius as well.
