He couldn't trust them with this secret because in this case secrecy was the key to success. If LV found out that DD knew about the horcruxes and was looking for them, he could have taken them from their hiding places and re-hidden them in some random places where it would be impossible to find them. This is especially true in Snape's case - what if LV managed to break through his mental defenses after all?

I think he wanted to *show* Harry how to use the sword on the locket, after their return form the cave :-). It just didn't work out the way he thought it would...
