Geoff:
In other words, the Beauxbatons style of travel! How about a 
"submarine" ship - like the one in which the Durmstrang delegation 
arrived?

I think that, despite what causes their passengers to see them, travelling 
gently along the Hogwarts drive behind a Threstral seems reasonable....
and you could always try a turn around the paddock on a bucking 
Hippogriff.
