Slightly off topic, but Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) had these type of white braces for years. You don't see it in the movies, but if you look careful, you can see it in interviews.
So, they are quite common, but I think they take much more time to make the correction than the typical old fashioned 'head gear' type braces.
