I'm pretty sure that the portraits aren't the same as original people and that they do not have the full personalities of the originals.  Voldemort probably wouldn't consider being a portrait true immortality.

There are plenty of jobs in the wizarding world, they just aren't all shown in the books. The wizarding world has a version of the radio that is more advanced then the muggle version.

The books and movies just show the magical classes since that is what the audience will likely find most interesting rather than classes that are also taught in real world schools. Hogwarts students are also probably taught much of what they need to know before Hogwarts.

The wizarding world invents new potions, spells and magical devices all the time. Technology just takes a different form there.
