Whether it was just JKR's style of writing, or whether the Weasleys keep to themselves, Ron doesn't seem to know many other kids or families. And, as others have said, House-elves stay out of sight.
But I think Molly would have been more than happy to have a House Elf if she could. It's in one of the books that she often said she'd like to have one to do the ironing. I wonder if Dobby had shown up at the door and offered to work for pay, if Molly would have considered it.
