Nikkalmati: What about the theory that the Elder Wand did not know of Harry's mastery until he told Voldemort in the Great Haoo about defeating Draco? In that case, the Wand had no reason not to act against Harry in the Forest. (I admit I have never been able to put all the pieces together).

Geoff:
I haven't seen anything about that theory but my
reaction is that that it's not a viable one.

The suggestion seems to be that the Wand doesn't
know who its current owner is. But, like the Sorting
Hat, the Elder Wand has to be a semi-sentient
powerful magical object to carry out its function.
It can't suddenly turn to Voldemort in the middle
of the duel and say "Excuse me, but are you really
my Master?".

Looking at the Sorting Hat again, it seemed to have
a pretty good handle on what was happening.
