I think from Snape's own behavior on the train to Hogwarts and even before,
he wasn't a very nice boy. It's pretty clear to me that he had made his
choice for Slytherin long before stepping foot on the Hogwarts Express that
first day. Not that that gives James Potter and Sirius a pass for the way
they treated him. It doesn't.
