The whole plot line serves to illustrate how easy it is for people with otherwise high standards of ethics and high expectations of law and its enforcement can shed them in times of crisis. Consider the innocent owners of Dachshund dogs in WWI England, reported as German spies! Consider the responses of the United States (government and people alike) to 9/11, when the rule of law and the restrictions on detention without trial and even torture suddenly seemed irrelevant.

Me:Also, remember what Sirius told Harry, Ron, and Hermione in GoF: that Barty Crouch Sr. had him thrown into Azkaban without a trial, because of both Crouch's fanaticism and the climate of paranoia that prevailed at the time.-Chris
