I suppose we all look back on our own lives and wonder what would have
happened if we'd married someone different or nobody at all. It's mildly
interesting.
I enjoyed watching Hermione and Ron circling each other through several
volumes! And I suspect there's something about the Hogwarts Express that
makes people meet other people who are going to be significant in their
lives. Hermione, pretty much taking one look at Ron while searching for
Neville's toad and falling hard; tiny Ginny, waving madly and, surely, not
only at her brothers; Harry and Draco; Lily, Snape, James and Sirius in
their day.
I was never a shipper when the books were first appearing - happy to
respect JKR's judgment and let things develop - but Ginny never convinced
me as a character. So for that reason I'd have preferred Harry to end up
with someone more substantial, like Luna perhaps, or even Hannah. (Sorry,
Neville!) But, simply because she was such a minor character, it never
bothered me much. I just assumed there was more to her than met the
reader's eye.
I did appreciate the way in which the two marriages linked Harry, Hermione
and Ron - much tidier than a Harry-Hermione marriage, leaving Ron on the
outside.
