I think it's also to show the families values. Though Ron gets upset with his hand me down robes and other things, his parents, especially father, values muggle lifestyle. I think he and his wife see certain things extravagantly and want their children to hold those same values. Importance is placed on family and friendship and love and less on vanity and extravagance. I could be totally off the mark though.
