Message-ID: No: HPFGUIDX 192972 Hi all, May 2 marks the 18th anniversary of the battle of Hogwarts. Rowling started apologizing each year for a death to mark the event. Last year it was for killing off Fred. This year it is for Remus. Actually her logic where Remus is concerned seems a bit unusual. Rowling says she decided to Kill Remus after allowing Arthur to live in Order of the Phoenix. She says further that the only time her editor saw her cry was over the fate of Teddy, never knowing either of his parents. Some nice sniff-worthy articles on this under the entertainment section of google news. Oh, and for those who use twitter, Rowling's posts on the topic are there as well. Sherry now: Yeah, it's been all over the net, facebook groups, twitter. It's incredible to me, how JKR built this world that we all celebrate or mourn, depending on the date. As for me, I wasn't shocked by the death of Remus. After she murdered Sirius, I figured JKR was going to get rid of all the Marauders and Snape. But Fred was a shocking horrible death. I still wish it had been Charlie or Percy, because we didn't love them the same as we did the Twins. And Remus. And Sirius. I didn't like losing any of those characters, but I think it's really important that literature acknowledges the fundamental tragedy that in war good people die. I think it's especially important that we don't conceal that fact from kids in works aimed at them. As for Teddy - he will go through his life with one really important piece of knowledge in his head - at least I hope he will - that Harry has as well. That he had parents who were willing to die for him for him to have a better world. That's not a little thing to know - one thing that angered me when I first realised it on reading the books was the fact that Harry had been lied to, that his parents had died in an accident - so for years he was denied that knowledge, that understanding, that they died for him. Fred's death is painful because he left behind a twin and his mother's worst fear came true. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I too appreciated that JKR showed that in war, good people die. War is so glorified in so many areas. I can't say it as eloquently as Shaun did, but I agree completely. I mourned the loss of Fred, but such things happen in both real and fictional life. Remus and Nymphadora, though, that was tough.I would have liked to have seen them live on in the series. I wasn't the one writing the books, though.
