I was given the first book by my mother who thought I might enjoy it
because I had always liked fantasy books. I wasn't sure what to think when
I received it but became an immediate fan once I started reading. I
certainly didn't receive the book immediately after it came out, but I am
fairly sure it was before or right around when the 2nd book was released.

The only thing that surprises me now is that it wasn't until about 2011
that I realized fan fiction existed and read my first Harry Potter fan
fiction.
