It's been a long time since I wandered the dusty halls of HPfGU. I owe the wonderful people on this group so, so much! The Lexicon got its start as a resource for our discussions on this group, after all. I see many names of Potter fans with whom I spent long hours discussing and debating Potter canon. I wonder if they're still around, or if they have "moved on," as Dumbledore would say. Several of them wrote essays for the Harry Potter Lexicon way back when -- and essays by HPfGU members were always the best ones. Many if not most started as lengthy discussions right here on this group. We have completely revamped the Lexicon over the past couple of years and I would love to start including more top quality essays on the site. Are there any of the Old Crowd around who would like to write something again? What about the new members, maybe those who have no idea who some of us original group members even are. We're also featuring fan artwork on every page we possibly can, so if you are an artist or know of an artist who might want to have their work featured, speak up. If you're one of the Old Crowd and would like to update your author page on the new Lexicon, let me know. Or just drop me a line to let me know how you're doing. Seems like it's been a few lifetimes since the old eGroup days... Message-ID: No: HPFGUIDX 193178 You've probably all seen the new cast photo for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. One character is unnamed, played by Claudia Kim. According to the promos, she plays a Maledictus, a person who carries a blood curse which will ultimately transform her into a beast. There are a number of clues which suggest that the beast she transforms into is a snake (look at her costume, for example) and that she is featured on the circus poster as the "Enchanting Snake Girl." If so, the fact that her name is being withheld in promos suggests that it may be a huge clue or revelation. Anyone else think her name might just be Nagini? We're going to record a Lexicon podcast in the next few days and talk about this theory. I'd love to include comments from HPfGU fans, the savviest Potter people on the planet. As part of that, he sent out the following questionnaire about the rooms we know about in the Department of Mysteries: Entrance Chamber How do Unspeakables identify the room they require? 1. Guess, like Harry and the D.A. 2. Use a special spell to identify the rooms 3. Room recognizes Unspeakables and will open the appropriate door when they name the required room. 4. Some other way (suggestions welcome) Hall of Prophecy How do prophecies get into the room? 1. Sent in by the seer 2. They just magically appear there 3. Unspeakables are alerted that a prophecy has been spoken, and they track down information about it. 4. Some other way (suggestions welcome) Brain Room Why did the brains attack Ron? 1. They are Muggle brains and will attack any wizard 2. They are Dark Wizard brains that attack by nature 3. Thoughts from one brain are often in conflict with those from another brain 4. Some other reason (suggestions welcome) Death Chamber Why did only Harry Potter and Luna Lovegood hear the voices beyond veil? 1. Only those that have seen death can hear them (like seeing Thestrals) 2. They had lost loved ones who were trying to call to them 3. The two of them had vivid imaginations, and were imagining the voices 4. Some other reason (suggestions welcome) Time Room In this room there is a magical bell jar, that cycles things back to its earliest stage, then on through its life cycle to the end of life, then cycles back to the point of birth again; is it: 1. An invention of modern-day wizards 2. A discovery from ancient times that is being studied to see how it works 3 Something that came back from the future (either accidentally or on purpose) 4. Something else entirely (suggestions welcome) Space Chamber Are the objects seen in this room the actual planets, etc., (was Pluto actually blown up by Luna)? 1. No, they are just replicas 2. Yes, they are the actual planets (Pluto had to be repaired, and its 4 small moons, not discovered by the Muggles until 2005, nine years after the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, are bits they missed) 3. No, but they do form a link for instant transportation to the real thing 4. Something else entirely (suggestions welcome) Love Chamber The Love Chamber is kept locked at all times, so very little is actually known about it. It is rumored that it contains a large fountain of Amortentia (the most powerful love potions known) in the middle of it. The question is: what is going on behind those locked doors? Possibilities I've come up with are: 1. Researching love potions 2. Researching the kind of magic that saved Harry Potter because of his mother's love and sacrifice 3. Studying the 4 forms of love that the Greeks came up with (agape: unconditional love, feelings for one's children, etc.; eros: intimate love, sexual passion; philia: brotherly love, affectionate regard, friendship; storge: common/natural empathy normally within a family, can also mean acceptance/putting up with the situation) 4. All of the above 5. Something else, or some other combination of the above (other ideas welcome) My main question here is: Are other people interested in speculating about what goes on in these rooms? If you've read this far, I'm hoping you might be. Perhaps we could discuss what Muggles know about the subject being studied in each room, what we know from the books or just speculate about what wizards know about them. Anyone game? Some I was able to answer immediately for myself, others not so sure of. I think they are great to contemplate though, since we never get answers from the book. After all, this is the wizarding world and another magical snake, the basilisk, can live many hundreds of years. Wizards in general do seem to have a longer life than muggles, so a magical person affected by a curse which turns them into a magical beast I feel could indeed have an extremely unnatural life span. Also our Nagini could be a descendant of this one as well, assuming she is the beast in question, not the Creator or charmer of what becomes Nagini...lots of possibilities. Which is what will make guessing such fun. Have not been in much of a position to discover how Potter traditionalists feel about cursed child.
