Hi Steve! ? I am still a fan ... Read the books ... Fall asleep each night to the sound of Jim Dale reading HP. So much easier at my age LOL Almost 72 ? My name is in the Lexicon. I did the number 12 bit and helped with tge British/US bit and spent many hours discussing HP and the Lexicon with Steve. The reason I lost track of everyone is that I had a house fire and lost my computer and my fairly complete HP collection! Broke my heart! Some pieces were irreplaceable. My essay was about "Who is Mrs. Figg?", since Figg is her married name, and we never learn the last name she had at birth, to guess what wizarding world family she belonged to. My guess has since been proven wrong, by Pottermore, but I figured that Arabella Figg was most likely Minerva McGonnagal's sister. Lots of reasons why, one major one being "I have never so much as transfigured a tea bag.", meaning she knew a lot about Transfiguration which MM specialized in. I used the wand I won this Halloween when I dressed up as Newt. I loved the Lexicon, haven't visited in some time. Jerri -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I wondered mildly why she was "Mrs." Figg. Rowling seemed to use a lot of standard English literature concepts. The boarding school, the orphan boy, the aunt and/or uncle who don't understand him, etc. And in my experience of English literature, mad old ladies who live alone and keep cats were somewhat more apt to be never married than to be widows (or divorced). But it wasn't a major issue. Mrs. Figg just kept cats and broke her leg just in time for Harry to get to go to the zoo and talk to the snake. She also kept an eye on Harry while the Dursleys were getting Dudley his Smeltings uniform, and got knocked down by Dudley while he was riding his racing bike. She seemed like a useful plot device. Then came Goblet of Fire. In Chapter 7 we are reminded of Mrs. Figg again, as Harry remembers staying with her when the Dursleys had gone on holiday. And the shabby two man tent, that was a three room flat inside, was "furnished in exactly the same sort of style as Mrs. Figg's; there were crocheted covers on the mismatched chairs, and a strong smell of cats." An interesting point. After Cedric's death and Fudge's refusal to accept the truth, Dumbledore sends Sirius on a mission. "Sirius, I need you to set off at once. You are to alert Remus Lupin, Arabella Figg, Mundungus Fletcher -- the old crowd." And in an interview, when a reader asked JKR if Arabella Figg was the same as Mrs. Figg, the answer was "well spotted." The reader knew that there was more to Mrs. Figg than met the eye. In The Order of the Phoenix we learn quite a bit more about Mrs. Figg. Interestingly, she isn't mentioned as being in Moody's photo of the original Order of the Phoenix and she never seemed to show up at Grimmauld Place. I will first refer to the ministry hearing, before going back to the dementors attack.Mrs. Figg appears at the Ministry of Magic to testify in Harry's defense. I wonder how she got to London and the ministry? Dumbledore must have arranged it somehow. She, like Dumbledore, is there several hours ahead of the originally scheduled hearing. It is noted that she is wearing her carpet slippers. Fudge asks her: "Full name?" She replies: "Arabella Doreen Figg." So, her name has grown. In Philosopher's Stone she is "Mrs. Figg." In Goblet of Fire we learn that she is also "Arabella Figg". Now she is "Arabella Doreen Figg." But no maiden name is given. When Fudge asks how she can live near Harry Potter, since there are no other witches or wizards registered as living there, she replies that she is a squib and therefore not registered. Fudge replies: "We'll be checking on that. You'll leave details of your parentage with my assistant Weasley." This brought my original question of why JKR created her as a "Mrs." back to my mind. And although we must assume that she gave her parents' names to Percy, and thus he knows her on last name from before her marriage, Harry and the reader don't get this information. Why?I assume that it is because it is a name which would mean something to Harry and to the reader that JKR wants to reserve for a later time. I assume that Mrs. Figg is related to some major character. I have three candidates to propose. The first is "Perkins at the office", who loaned the tent that was decorated like Mrs. Figg's house to Mr. Weasley. However, I don't think this is likely, as this wouldn't be an important enough connection to keep secret and I can find no other support for this suggestion. To support my other two suggestions, I go to part of Mrs. Figg's conversation after the dementor attack. She is trying to get Harry and Dudley to hurry. She says: "But come on -- I'll be no help if they come back, I've never so much as Transfigured a teabag."Now, as far as we know the only defense against dementors is to use the "Expectro Patronum" spell. Why would Mrs. Figg refer to her lack of Transfiguration ability? I propose that Transfiguration is the wizarding world skill that Mrs. Figg has heard the most about from her closest wizarding world family member. Who do we now who is important in the books and expert at Transfiguration? PROFESSORS DUMBLEDORE and MCGONAGALL!! If Mrs. Figg were related to one or the other of these two characters it would be a major issue to both Harry and the reader and a worthwhile plot twist for JKR to introduce in a later book. Here are the reasons I believe that Mrs. Figg as a sister to MaGonagall is the more likely alternative.Dumbledore, when speaking to Sirius, referred to her as "Arabella Figg", not "my sister". When he had spoken to Hagrid about his brother Aberforth, he referred to him as his brother. More to the point, in her post dementors conversation with Harry she several times refers to "Dumbledore"; "what's Dumbledore going to say?" and "Of course, I know Dumbledore, who doesn't know Dumbledore?" If Albus Dumbledore is her brother, than Aberforth Dumbledore is ALSO her brother. The staff and students at Hogwarts, ministry officials, headmasters of other schools, etc. all often refer to the best known Dumbledore by his sir name alone, as he is the one they remember. But, to a sister, both men would be naturally thought of and referred to by first name. Also, in JKR's books people are far more likely to have siblings of the same gender than of the other gender. The Creevey brothers, Sirius and Regulis plus their cousins Bellatrix, Narcissa and Andromeda. The Patil Sisters. Hermione's potential sister that JKR decided will probably not appear. Many more examples exist. The only exceptions that I can recall are Molly Prewett Weasley whose two brothers were killed by the death eaters and Ginny Weasley who as six brothers. (This was written before HBP. That and the Black Family Tree do give us a few more examples of families with mixed gender siblings, the sisters whose young brother was killed by Grayback for one, but still same gender siblings are far more common in the books.) So, statistically, based on the family data we have to date, McGonagall is more likely to have a sister than Dumbledore. In addition, Mrs. Figg likes cats and McGonagall is an Animagus who transforms into a cat.And finally, when Mrs. Figg comes panting into sight at the end of the Dudley Demented chapter, she is "halfway out of her tartan carpet slippers." And we know that McGonagall wears tartan plaids a lot. She wears tartan dress robes to the ball in Goblet of Fire, and several times appears in a tartan dressing gown. She even has a tartan tin of biscuits in her office, which she offers to Harry in Order of the Phoenix. In conclusion, I am certain that we will eventually learn that Mrs. Figg is related to some major wizarding family. I believe that we will learn that Minerva McGonagall is her sister. (The only new mention of Mrs. Figg in the Half Blood Prince is her attendance at Professor Dumbledore's funeral.) My theory was before book 6 of course, but I and many others thought it fit Severus's character more. Okay in book 5 when we see his memories, and the man and woman are fighting, they are both described as looking like him so I'm thinking Eileen, his mom, and his grandfather, her dad. So if his dad, a muggle, was killed by Voldemort lets say when Severus was 6. Lets say He, Tobias, had gone into a potions shop to pick up some ingredients for his wife who was under the weather. Voldemort happens to be in the potions shop at the time. Voldemort just kills him for being a Muggle in a wizarding potions shop. Because that's what Voldemort does. LOL. One of Eileen's friends was near and runs in screaming that Tobias was killed...Destitute, Eileen and her young child have to go live with her father, Grand daddy Prince, who happens to be stuck up and hates Muggles. So he's shitty to Severus. Severus counts the years until he gets to go to Hogwarts and escape that crap and what happens but he goes to Hogwarts only to be immediately assaulted by the Gryffindor gang of gits. So he thinks things will improve and they get worse, as he sees it for no apparent or fair reason. All of it progressively worse after the death of his father at Voldemort's hand. So he wants to be a part of taking the bastard down at all cost cause you know Severus is bitter and can hang onto a grudge, this one at least deserving, though I doubt his dad would've wanted that for him. Either way, JKR even has him in book 6 proud seemingly of being the half blood Prince, which could indicate a love for his dad which I had already written into the game before that came out. Reminds me of a Grindelwald one I had after reading something I at first dismissed as ridiculous on the net about Harry and Grindelwald similarities. Did you know Grindelwald was imprisoned the year Voldemort started school? Interesting if he was supposed to stop him first and screwed himself over with the elder wand so he had to get imprisoned instead. I never thought that blood oath Grindelwald and Albus made sounded like a blood brother, loving trust thing. Hell I'd be flat out offended if my bff wanted me to make a pact promising never to kill her among other things. I"d be like really? Seriously? But that's another thing entirely having nothing to do with this particular line of thought. LOL. Glad you liked my Severus theory. I kept that as the reason in our RPG by request of others but would've done so anyway. Just fits his character more. I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed. Oh no you got me going on Severus and Lily. I try to be careful as I feel it's a soap box I can get on, but you asked. HAHA. Allow me to start with 2 JKR facts to consider, well 3 before I get into the deep stuff. 1. She has admitted her couples are all wrong and others often really hate them and the way she just appears to randomly stick them together without like building it up at all or showing compatibility. It's always a 'what?" sort of thing even if I don't particularly care about the characters involved and I'm not by far the only one on that particular train. LOL. I love her world and what she built but that particular bit of her work always felt like just a lack in writing on her part and maybe she should've just left it out. LOL. 2.Romance and needless death, neither built up to well or necessary to plot, seem to be the way she solves problems or plot connections, again a thing to which she has admitted. I.E she kills Albus so he can't be there to help Harry. I mean there are so many other ways one could've arranged that and any of them more in his character than being careless enough to mess with that Horcrux, and many of them could've lead to more interesting plots. Albus could've been kidnapped by DES and tortured, or he could've been required abroad to help with international or interspecies affairs, he often has the special touch and a look into that could've been really cool for plot, I mean it's like she just gets lazy and pushes the 'love' or 'kill' button to explain everything and just it lacks depth and a real feel for those particular characters. 3. Severus's actions toward Lily in book 5 don't appear to be those directed toward a friend with whom you are angry, nor do they appear to be directed to one he particularly knows well either. My husband interpreted his reaction/insults to Lily as ones he directed to a girl he hardly knows and who has just offended him by pretending to want to stick up for him just to annoy James Potter, someone he really hates. So he insults her. I mean if I hardly know you, you never care either way when people are tormenting me in the past and now you wanna say something to ruffle your boy toy would be cause he's not taking your side? Bugger off for sure. LOL. But the words seemed to be that no more or no less. Were it a close friend he could've should've said something more along the lines of,"You're finally saying something to that git now? Thanks for all the help in the past, Ills. Really." But oh yea as they weren't friends in the past why would she have helped him? Exactly. But JKR decides in book 6 that this should change for her convenience because no lets not take 5 minutes to think of other more fitting reasons Severus could be a De poser. So here I go. Severus and Lily have little in common and she's not nearly snarky or dry or hard enough to have garnered the friendship interest or more of Severus. I mean considering Severus's character. And having Muggle connections isn't nearly enough to strike up a friendship when you have so little in common. Yes we didn't see much of Lily so how do I know what they have in common? Well what little we did see supports the above perceptions and the fact she could possibly end up with James Potter is a clear indication of how different they are. So starting at the start I see no clear reason for the friendship to begin. But even if it did, considering Severus's character, laid out in all 5 books previously, he's not at all the sort to carry a torch for someone after they stabbed him in the back. For her to stab him in the first place they couldn't have been that close, for her to even be able to appreciate someone like James while being friends with Severus just doesn't fit so we go back to not likely in the first place, sorry. LOL. But yea, your bff or especially someone you may have loved gets with one of your long time tormentors, someone tormenting you admittedly via Sirius for no reason other than you exist, your friend gets with them, you realize they weren't your friend anyway. Weren't who you thought they were. So no you don't, especially if you're someone like Severus, you most certainly do not risk all that you're risking by working double agent style with someone as dangerous as Voldemort for any reason, not for them, not for their kid. Just not happening. As my husband said, some other man maybe, a softer one, a stupider one perhaps, but not Severus, just like many of her relationship set ups, not really thought out or in his character. What it is is a lot of people don't like Severus for the dry sarcastic misanthropic it that he is and want to see something else. Some soft dumb guy who is lovesick and redeemable. He's not asking to be redeemed or to be liked for something he's not. JKR wanted a certain archetype and for some reason decided to stick Severus into that. My opinion due to getting lazy after success with earlier books and not liking him so not caring if what she says about him fits or not. As an author myself I once wrote an entire book about a character I didn't like. He was the main lead and I like him now but it wasn't until after the book was written. However I still kept the integrity of him being who he is and that being more important than my convenience. And I was a mix of pleased and surprised when a lot of people really loved him. I love him now too but it was a bit in coming. I was pleased that I wrote him fairly and that my dislike for him did not taint anything, so that was awesome. Said book I had to pull from amazon when our publisher crashed and stopped paying so gotta find another agent but yeah. Point being she's admitted to not liking Severus and she's admitted to couple errors and dumb reasons she's done things. Not because she really felt the character would do it but because it met a goal she had in mind. I tend to listen to my characters like they're telling me a story and sometimes they even do things I don't particularly like but it's them and I stay out of it, thus my sig line. LOL. But I am not JKR and that's fine. Okay sure I"d love to switch bank accounts with her but yeah. LOL. Still even if she drives the characters rather than listening to them, it'd only take 5 min thought to make it actually fit their personality more. Now to demonstrate what i mean by someone Severus would be compatible with...in our game that again was in full swing before book 6, my husband wrote someone who had an interest in Severus. She graduated some years ahead of Potter, and Severus and she didn't get together until she was well out of school cause Severus wouldn't ever mess with a student. But her name is Mag, she has a deep love of books, like Severus preferring them to the company of people. At lunch in school she'd always eat with a book in her hand and if she did talk to anyone, it was to the house ghost, the Bloody Baron. She works with gemstones to make wands that amplify power, she loves magical creatures over people and later worked with a white ridge back dragon, who consequently hates Severus. LOL. But she likes dragons far more than people. She's more quiet than Severus so not as openly biting, more sarcastic when she is, though, she is into Muggle psychology, so while a pure blood is open enough to see the usefulness in some Muggle practices in how it can help her interact with others, very loyal to Severus to a point that can annoy others, her other good friend is Griphook from the bank as she met him while dealing in stones for her enhancement work. So not your typical person at all, studious and like Severus an only child. Of course she had to express an interest in him first. LOL. But it eventually got sorted. Point is at least were you to see the 2 written together you'd be able to see how that could happen. Who can stand Severus? A white light soft heart? No way! LOL. Someone who can't stand most other people. It's real. Okay I get that was way more than you asked for. LOL. I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed. Although I *could* see Lily and Snape being friends as children. Remember how obnoxious Tuney always is, even as a child, and Lily wanted to remain friends with her. I think that even though Severus was always a bit abrasive, he was Lily's link to magic until Hogwarts. I could see their friendship dissolving after they arrived at Hogwarts, but I expect she would have been interested enough in the wizarding world to put up with Snape until then at least. However, I totally agree with him falling out of love with her (if he was ever in love with her)s soon as she gets with Potter, or sooner. Like it or not, as a child James was a horrible bully. I really can't even see Lily getting together with him unless she wasn't really as nice as people say. After all, according to everyone Harry talks to, excluding Severus himself, James was a paragon of virtue. To listen to all the other stories, you would think that he had no faults. I always wonder why people believed Sirius' claims about Severus being evil from the start. It was Sirius after all who claimed that he came to school knowing more curses than most 7th years?and Sirius said that while he was trying to defend his own bullying behavior. Of course, that doesn't make Snape any nicer, but our perspective on the past is colored by what characters say and we don't always know the background or motivations of the speaker. Dumbledore is a great example of that. Of course, now I'm just raving about all sorts of stuff. Sorry for getting so off topic.
