Hi Crescent. Oh no you got me going on Severus and Lily. I try to be careful as I feel it's a soap box I can get on, but you asked. HAHA.
Allow me to start with 2 JKR facts to consider, well 3 before I get into the deep stuff.
1. She has admitted her couples are all wrong and others often really hate them and the way she just appears to randomly stick them together without like building it up at all or showing compatibility. It's always a 'what?" sort of thing even if I don't particularly care about the characters involved and I'm not by far the only one on that particular train. LOL. I love her world and what she built but that particular bit of her work always felt like just a lack in writing on her part and maybe she should've just left it out. LOL.
2.Romance and needless death, neither built up to well or necessary to plot, seem to be the way she solves problems or plot connections, again a thing to which she has admitted. I.E she kills Albus so he can't be there to help Harry. I mean there are so many other ways one could've arranged that and any of them more in his character than being careless enough to mess with that Horcrux, and many of them could've lead to more interesting plots. Albus could've been kidnapped by DES and tortured, or he could've been required abroad to help with international or interspecies affairs, he often has the special touch and a look into that could've been really cool for plot, I mean it's like she just gets lazy and pushes the 'love' or 'kill' button to explain everything and just it lacks depth and a real feel for those particular characters.
3. Severus's actions toward Lily in book 5 don't appear to be those directed toward a friend with whom you are angry, nor do they appear to be directed to one he particularly knows well either. My husband interpreted his reaction/insults to Lily as ones he directed to a girl he hardly knows and who has just offended him by pretending to want to stick up for him just to annoy James Potter, someone he really hates. So he insults her. I mean if I hardly know you, you never care either way when people are tormenting me in the past and now you wanna say something to ruffle your boy toy would be cause he's not taking your side? Bugger off for sure. LOL. But the words seemed to be that no more or no less. Were it a close friend he could've should've said something more along the lines of,"You're finally saying something to that git now? Thanks for all the help in the past, Ills. Really." But oh yea as they weren't friends in the past why would she have helped him? Exactly. But JKR decides in book 6 that this should change for her convenience because no lets not take 5 minutes to think of other more fitting reasons Severus could be a De poser.
So here I go.
Severus and Lily have little in common and she's not nearly snarky or dry or hard enough to have garnered the friendship interest or more of Severus. I mean considering Severus's character. And having Muggle connections isn't nearly enough to strike up a friendship when you have so little in common. Yes we didn't see much of Lily so how do I know what they have in common? Well what little we did see supports the above perceptions and the fact she could possibly end up with James Potter is a clear indication of how different they are. So starting at the start I see no clear reason for the friendship to begin.
But even if it did, considering Severus's character, laid out in all 5 books previously, he's not at all the sort to carry a torch for someone after they stabbed him in the back. For her to stab him in the first place they couldn't have been that close, for her to even be able to appreciate someone like James while being friends with Severus just doesn't fit so we go back to not likely in the first place, sorry. LOL. But yea, your bff or especially someone you may have loved gets with one of your long time tormentors, someone tormenting you admittedly via Sirius for no reason other than you exist, your friend gets with them, you realize they weren't your friend anyway. Weren't who you thought they were. So no you don't, especially if you're someone like Severus, you most certainly do not risk all that you're risking by working double agent style with someone as dangerous as Voldemort for any reason, not for them, not for their kid. Just not happening. As my husband said, some other man maybe, a softer one, a stupider one perhaps, but not Severus, just like many of her relationship set ups, not really thought out or in his character.
What it is is a lot of people don't like Severus for the dry sarcastic misanthropic it that he is and want to see something else. Some soft dumb guy who is lovesick and redeemable. He's not asking to be redeemed or to be liked for something he's not. JKR wanted a certain archetype and for some reason decided to stick Severus into that. My opinion due to getting lazy after success with earlier books and not liking him so not caring if what she says about him fits or not. As an author myself I once wrote an entire book about a character I didn't like. He was the main lead and I like him now but it wasn't until after the book was written. However I still kept the integrity of him being who he is and that being more important than my convenience. And I was a mix of pleased and surprised when a lot of people really loved him. I love him now too but it was a bit in coming. I was pleased that I wrote him fairly and that my dislike for him did not taint anything, so that was awesome. Said book I had to pull from amazon when our publisher crashed and stopped paying so gotta find another agent but yeah. Point being she's admitted to not liking Severus and she's admitted to couple errors and dumb reasons she's done things. Not because she really felt the character would do it but because it met a goal she had in mind. I tend to listen to my characters like they're telling me a story and sometimes they even do things I don't particularly like but it's them and I stay out of it, thus my sig line. LOL. But I am not JKR and that's fine. Okay sure I"d love to switch bank accounts with her but yeah. LOL. Still even if she drives the characters rather than listening to them, it'd only take 5 min thought to make it actually fit their personality more.
Now to demonstrate what i mean by someone Severus would be compatible with...in our game that again was in full swing before book 6, my husband wrote someone who had an interest in Severus. She graduated some years ahead of Potter, and Severus and she didn't get together until she was well out of school cause Severus wouldn't ever mess with a student. But her name is Mag, she has a deep love of books, like Severus preferring them to the company of people. At lunch in school she'd always eat with a book in her hand and if she did talk to anyone, it was to the house ghost, the Bloody Baron. She works with gemstones to make wands that amplify power, she loves magical creatures over people and later worked with a white ridge back dragon, who consequently hates Severus. LOL. But she likes dragons far more than people. She's more quiet than Severus so not as openly biting, more sarcastic when she is, though, she is into Muggle psychology, so while a pure blood is open enough to see the usefulness in some Muggle practices in how it can help her interact with others, very loyal to Severus to a point that can annoy others, her other good friend is Griphook from the bank as she met him while dealing in stones for her enhancement work. So not your typical person at all, studious and like Severus an only child. Of course she had to express an interest in him first. LOL. But it eventually got sorted. Point is at least were you to see the 2 written together you'd be able to see how that could happen. Who can stand Severus? A white light soft heart? No way! LOL. Someone who can't stand most other people. It's real.
Okay I get that was way more than you asked for. LOL.
I'm friends with the monster that's under my bed.
I get along with the voices inside of my head.
