I would think that Harry is worried about what Sirius would think precisely because he DOES admire him so much.  He feels that it's important for Sirius to have a good opinion of him, and at a young age, kids generally feel that showing any sign of weakness is a failing rather than a strength of knowing their own weaknesses.  (Does that make any sense at all?)

No one has mentioned my own theory about this:  Moody was a bad guy.  Perhaps he simply enjoyed the thought of making Harry suffer needlessly, or maybe thought he was helping Voldemort by maybe "weakening" Harry's defenses.  (Which came to naught, anyway.  Huh.  Do people even use the word "naught" anymore?)
