THE OLD CROWD INTRO
***Name:
Parker Brown-Nesbit
***Nicknames/IDs:
harpdreamer (yahoo)
***Age:
46
***Family:
Husband Doug, a dog, Hollyn, a cat, Asha. Three kids, one
grandchild. My older son (actually all the kids are stepchildren)
will be married on Monday, which is our wedding anniversary.
My mother lives in my hometown, 12 hours away, which is far enough,
thankyouverymuch. Love her, but she still treats me like a child,
which (obviously) I'm not. Doug's parents are still alive, hale and
hearty at 89 & 88.
***Home
Summerville, South Carolina. We moved into the house in March. Am
*still* unpacking boxes.
***Birthday, Place of Birth:
13 May, Middlesboro Kentucky. I moved to Murray (all the way across
the state) when I was adopted at 7 months old.
***Education/Job/Role in Life etc:
BS in Library Science/English, MA Ed. Secondary Education, Teaching
Emphasis in English. Never used professionally. I student taught,
and while I enjoyed the kids, I hated the red-tape and demands that
said I must teach what they decreed and the way they decreed. I'm
still teaching, although it's very informal. I'm one of the weavers
at Middleton Place, a historic rice plantation. My job is to educate
people about the life and work of the enslaved Africans and African-
Americans who made places like Middleton Place possible. (It's fun
and also quite a challenge!) Doug has called me the best thing that
ever happened to him, so I think my role as
wife/confidante/psycologist is working very well. <g> I'm also mum
to the aforementioned dog & cat.
***First contact with Harry Potter:
Summer 1999 (I think). I'd heard all the fuss, wondered what it was
all about, checked out Chamber of Secrets (Philosopher's Stone was
checked out), read it in one night and was hooked.
***Favourite Potter things (books, characters, ships, fics, objets
d'Art, general enthusing):
Books: Like a lot of you, PoA (Sirius and Remus!), then GoF.
Characters: Harry, Remus, Sirius, Snape, Hagrid, Dumbledore, Arthur
& Molly,
Let me add another - Lines:
Snape's introduction to the first years. Especially hearing Alan
Rickman say it.
Ships: H/H of course, but don't like the way things are going. It's
not canonical (yet ::crosses fingers::) but I'm also a Remus/Sirius
shipper.
Fics: I read mostly slash, but Penny & Carole's 'A Sirius Affair'
is one of my favourites. Anna Milton's series and both of Yael's
series are some of the het I've read & enjoyed. Oh, also *anything*
Al writes. Including his grocery lists <g>
Merchandise/Films:
Second Catherine's 'bleaurgh' for the films, even though I've watched
them & own them (I'll admit it--mostly for the sets and Daniel
Radcliffe). My question--besides the ones Catherine asked--is *why*
is Steve Kloves the writer & why does he see fit to change perfectly
good lines?
Merchandise: Several of the Dept 56 boxes, two copies each of the
books (one in American, one in the proper English). the Hedwig,
Hagrid & Snitch stuffed toys, several notebooks, which I use to write
my fic in. Also some gel pens & trading cards & a couple of games.
I'm not as fond of the HP merchandise as I am the LoTR stuff.
***Extent of Potter obsession:
Moderately obsessed. Used to be a whole lot more.
***Other interests/activities:
Like Catherine, I'm an obsessive book collector & reader. I suffer
withdrawal symptoms if I can't visit a bookstore every week. I'm
also rabidly obsessed with Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion and a
series called Nightrunner. I'm also a musician, so listening to CDs
is a big joy in my life. Weaving, spinning, and walking my dog
pretty much round out my day.
***Current/recent reading:
The Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling, Terry Pratchett, 'Where
Queen Elizabeth Slept and What Dickens Ate' (it's a dictionary of
British words in use from the 16th Century to present).
***Current/recent listening:
Best of Silly Wizard, Karan Casey, LoTR soundtrack (FotR & TTT), and
a compilation of music found in Sing Out! magazine.
***Current/recent viewing:
My Saturday night Britcoms--Waiting for God, Are You Being Served, &
As Time Goes By (I wish they'd quit repeating the old ones & give us
the new!). We also watch The Red Green Show. Haven't watched much
commercial TV since the season finale of The West Wing.
