Maybe I'm just displaying my ignorance here, but I don't see that just
because Lupin was a Prefect in Fifth Year, James could not have been made a
Prefect in Sixth Year and therefore eligible to be Head Boy in Seventh Year.
If Lupin were removed or stepped down as Prefect after Fifth, then a
replacement would be needed and James could have stepped in to the breach,
as it were.

Or am I missing something?
