  Lexicon Steve:

  > So here's a more general question that I've wondered about.
What's up with the "Prince" thing?<

  Pippin replied:

We have hints of an obsolete aristocracy, just as we have hints
of an obsolete religion--something that used to be important in
the past but which most people don't consider relevant
  nowadays.

  akh pipes up:

It seems that virtually all the ghosts and older portraits have titles, as well, which implies that aristocracy was the norm centuries ago. Nearly Headless Nick, the Bloody Baron, the Grey Lady (I know, that might be a stretch), and even possibly the Fat Friar, given that younger sons in the aristocracy often were shunted off to the Church. Then we have Sir Cadogan, the Fat Lady (ditto Grey Lady) and the assorted ghosts at the Death Day Party in CoS. I tend to agree with those who support the theory that the Half-Blood Prince may very well be a reference to a character from the past, say, Godric Gryffindor...

akh, who ought to be driving to the airport right now
