I of course considered this explanation. Unfortunately, JKR said in 
the Edinburgh Book Festival:

The first question that I have never been asked—it has probably been 
asked in a chatroom but no one has ever asked me—is, "Why didn't 
Voldemort die?" Not, "Why did Harry live?" but, "Why didn't Voldemort 
die?" The killing curse rebounded, so he should have died. Why didn't 
he? At the end of Goblet of Fire he says that one or more of the 
steps that he took enabled him to survive...

Here she seem to take it as obvious that in GH there was a "killing 
curse" that rebounded and hit Voldy. Note that she starts the next 
statement about Voldy with "he says that..." but NOT the statement 
about the killing curse. So she tells it from her authorial POV, as 
opposed to something Voldy claims and might be lying or in error.  

If you don't believe JKR in this, you still need to explain why Voldy 
was blown to vapor for 13 years.
