Well, I'm a little disappointed in the Horcrux thing for this very 
reason.  I don't see how we could really have figured it out from 
what we had in the previous books.  Indeed I don't know of anyone 
who did.

In fact, my whole line of reasoning was that therefore Voldemort's 
remarks about the steps he had taken must be a red herring 
(supported by the fact that in GOF he doesn't know *which* steps had 
worked, and that Dumbledore stresses that Voldemort doesn't 
understand the really important things in magic).
