Perhaps I should have gone the step further and explicitly pointed out 
that Rowling's balance quote/the Sorting Hat's OoP call for harmony 
and reintegration are metaphors for the qualities of a strong and 
successful individual (per JKr): 

Hard work, Brains, Ambition and Courage. 

That being the case, enough ambition will get you into Slythern, 
unless, of course, you insist on staying out.
